As a small business, Time Domain has executed more than $60 million in government contracts, including multiple Phase III Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) awards. The company has received an SBIR Quality Award for outstanding work performed in service to the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center (AMRDEC) and been recognized as a DARPA SBIR Success Story. Frost and Sullivan named Time Domain the recipient of its 2007 North American Technology Innovation Award for its pioneering research and development in the field of UWB. Below are some examples of our UWB projects:
Networked Ranging and Communications Projects
- Contributed a UWB ranging system as part of a hybrid GPS-IMU-UWB location system for emergency responders. UWB ranging was a critical augmentation technology correcting navigator drift in an indoor tracking system.
- Augmented GPS through an extended Kalman filter to enable on-site, quick-deployed anchor nodes in a distributed sensor network.
- Implemented a UWB communications network and two-way time of flight (TOF) localization system that reported location and data from a mobile radiological sensor as it maneuvered through a target area.
- Implemented several networked communications / positioning systems that allow robots to follow a leader. The following robots were a variety of vehicles varying in size from 2 ½ ton trucks to small unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs).
- Demonstrated several variations of a networked communications / positioning system which provided situational awareness to insure the safe operation of autonomous vehicles in the presence of nearby personnel.
- Built a network-based communications and location system that tracked a squad as they moved into and through single & multistory buildings.
- Built a panic alarm system that allowed a person in distress to transmit an alarm message to a central station.
- The central station then used an angle of arrival (AOA) calculation to determine that person's location.
- Designed, built, and commercialized a medium wideband time difference of arrival (TDOA) location system for tracking personnel and assets through a variety of environments.
Radar and Networked Radar projects
- Implemented a network-based, 10 node, 500 meter long UWB radar fence capable of detecting and reporting any fence crossing.
- Demonstrated a networked 20 node UWB radar fence that detected, localized, tracked, and classified targets (animal vs. human) as they move through a forest.
- Built a helicopter limited visibility landing radar that accurately determines aircraft altitude from 300 feet down to 6 inches and ground slope to within a few degrees.
- Developed a multi-static radar for detecting, localizing, and tracking multiple people as they move through a house or office. Targets were localized to within a few inches.
Communications Projects
- Built a miniature LPI / LPD transmitter for covert communications.
- Demonstrated several long range UWB-based communications links, including:
- 13 km 400 kbps com link
- 1 km ground to air UAV 256 kbps com & ranging link
- 1 km, 1 Mbps com link
- 2.5 km low data rate beacon
Hybrid Radar, Communications, and Localization Network System
- Built a system of 25 Unattended Ground Sensors (UGS) that used:
- UWB mono and multi-static radar to detect, track, classify targets
- UWB ranging to determine sensor location
- UWB communications for inter-unit messaging and alarm exfiltration
ASIC Design Projects
- Mixed signal ASIC design, including:
- 3 generations of UWB transmitter ASICs
- 3 generations of UWB timer ASICs
- 3 generations of UWB receiver ASICs
- A hybrid UWB timer multi-receiver ASIC
- Designed, built, and produced a full custom digital baseband ASIC
